Define COUGAR?

A few years back I was at the country club with my girlfriends. We always sat at the bar talking to Whitney (our favorite bartender who took care of us so well.) As we sat we did what I like to call “window shopping” and “people watching.” I am so good at reading a mans mind most of the time and knowing what he is thinking, however, I’m not so good at determining ones age. In fact, I dated a few of these super nice and quite good looking men on to find out later that they were at least 10 years younger than me, and they loved it! Me on the other hand, how did I feel? Well, it was intriguing and quite appealing, and just when my head would get stuck in that la-la cloud my friends would come around the corner singing “Mrs Robinson” to me. That song (and one of my favorites) became my nickname/theme song to my BFFs.

Today, we call women that date younger men a “cougar.”  This was initially an insult that meant an older woman who stalked and pounced on unsuspecting younger men while hoping for a sexual liaison. Women called Cougar were thought to be pathetic, lonely old women who preyed on immature young men because no one else would have them. My, my my how times have changed! Now if you are a cougar its the younger women who what to know what your secret is and how you are getting these younger men? It’s simple actually, we’ve been around for a lot longer, we know the ropes, we really know their moves and we don’t play their games. Over the years the name has been redefined and it is quite a compliment to be called a “Cougar” by men.

  1. Wonderful post! As the wife of a younger man I can attest to the qualities of a “cougar”! It is a great experience and the most amazing relationship I have ever had. I’m blessed to have such fantastic husband. Being older gave me confidence, solid self-esteem and self-awareness. I am happy being by myself and enjoy the time that I spend with my spouse. Men appreciate the fact that a woman doesn’t “need” them to be happy! It is a wonderful quality. As a relationship coach I work with clients to help them develop self-love first! You hit the nail on the head with your list of qualities! It IS an attitude. Thank you for sharing this!

    • Thank You so much for such kind words! Truly very heartfelt. Best wishes to you in your marriage, you’re very fortunate to have found such a wonderful man. It gives many others “hope” to read your words, myself included.
